Santa Cruz - Camping trip #1

May 2015

The last weekend of May we went camping with a group of friends at New Brighton State Beach in Santa Cruz. This is the 2nd year in a row we have camped there. Last year it was on Memorial Day but reservations are so hard to get for that weekend that in order for all of us to go and have campsites near each other we went the weekend after Memorial Day. It was much quieter than on the busy holiday weekend.

We were the first of our group to arrive so we headed to the beach and played while we waited for the others to arrive.

The next day we did a beach day. We hauled all our gear down to the beach and spent the day playing in the water and enjoying each others company.

This was Cooper's first camping trip. He did really well. Being a black dog on a hot beach meant that he got dips on the shade under the umbrella.

Oh man, just looking at that sand makes me cringe. Just the thought of that grinding in his teeth - yuck! But he didn't seem to mind.

Kurt and his shovel at the beach. Seems familiar . . .

Rebecca and Avery. This is Coach Doug's wife and daughter. Such great friends of ours!

Doug brought this solar oven and made lunch for us on the beach. It was super yummy! And a very cool way to cook it!

Playing in the campsite with the other kids. I think we had 14 kids in all.

Being Cooper's first camping trip, he was not comfortable with the stairs going in and out of the trailer. We had to lift him out every. single. time. The boy would not come out no matter what you offered him.

If you ever get the chance to go to Santa Cruz, you HAVE to go to The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. It is absolutely beautiful! None of us had ever been there before so we didn't know what to expect and didn't pack for a long adventure. We wish we had because we could have explored the area all day long.

Within feet of the entrance the boys found logs and immediately prepared for battle.
 Boys!

Little bro has to do everything big bro does!

Ready for battle!

The trails were just beautiful. Pictures never do things justice so trust me - it was amazing!

13 of the 14 kids, plus a dog.

When we got back we had one exhausted puppy! He curled up under the table and we didn't hear from him for quite awhile!

Our last day we headed to the beach again, just a little further down by the pier. The kids had fun playing in the sand and Kurt had fun digging them holes.

Some fun under-the-pier pictures.

On the way back to camp we found a super yummy ice cream shop. We will definitely be stopping there again!

Such a great trip!
